Mindfulness: Wishy-washy?

Many schools and other educational institutions have invested enthusiastically in mindfulness and mindset programmes but are not entirely sure how to work with them or even if there will be any benefit at all from such programmes.

From his article in TES: Willem Kuyken, a leading advocate of mindfulness, aware that there are many teachers having doubts about its practice particularly because, unlike in Health Authorities where there has been research into its benefits, particularly in the field of Mental health, there has been little or nor researched in its efficacy in education. Kuyken also knows that some teacher have an outright hostility to its adoption in schools. Despite his belief that mindfulness has its place he agrees that teachers are right to be sceptical.

“There’s a lot of enthusiasm [about] mindfulness and we think that the enthusiasm may be ahead of the research,” says Kuyken, professor of clinical psychology at the University of Oxford and director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre. He goes on to say “I completely see why people might say it’s wishy-washy, which is why we’re working to ensure there is good research answering important questions about whether it works, how it works and how it can be best implemented in school systems”

It would seem apparent that Kuyken has not come across Bounce, The Thrive Programme in Education. Beth’s fear of being sick!
